Use an arduino, simple L293D bipolar stepper driver circuit, and throw in a 10k? Pot to an analog pin for speed adjustment.
Got a laser, but we may want to play with optics for precision
The hunt for an open source windows GUI software continues, lots exists, but mostly command line
One member offered a kinect,
