  • New Members: Amanda (LikesLanguage) and Stephen (Racal)
  • Electrical: ~150 for 2 115v lines, or perhaps a 220v line.
    • Talk to Paul if you have input.
    • perhaps 4 lines, 3 to rack, 1 to far basement
  • Paul may be relocating outside of calgary for work conditions
  • moulding and casting starts this weekend.
    • Contact Paul/Kirk to get on said list, or check the mailing list archives.

Discussed 'Associate Member' / Sponsorship

                  • This was discussed and not voted in or on...

The 'Associate Member' or Sponsorship (Sponsorship being the more favored approch) A full member would then 'sponsor' in a member who cannot either:

A: Cannot afford but can contribute to the space is then sponsored in whole/part as they feel comfortable. B: Can only afford to partially pay dues.

The sponsored member would be granted full membership rights. There will have to be amendment made to charter after decision. All membership rules would apply. They would be granted access to server resources and said security. The sponsoring member would have the right at any time to pull sponsorship based on personal financial commitment and personal right to do so.

There was a lot more, but I forget what it all was.

  • wintr discussed a possible arrangement with SPIE (Security Professionals Information Exchange www.spie.ca)

Arrangement with SPIE:

wintr will post more details to the mailing list as they are formalized. The summary is that if we can provide 2 protospace branded speakers per 12 month period to SPIE for their luncheon's, they will give us one months worth of rent. A link on the website to them would be nice, but there is no requirement for branding on anything that we do. Just two speakers per year to present for them (come on, we should be presenting at our meetings anyways). Also, if one of their topics align with something that we are interested in, we would could possibly do hands on on the evening following their luncheon.

Meeting topics:

  • Lock Picking - Ultramegaman brought some lock picking kits and a lock for members to experiment with. He mentioned that he, or someone with more experience, should do a lock picking tech talk at a future meeting. Members are asked to bring any spare locks they may have.
  • Blog - CalgaryProtospace account at blogger.com has been registered.
  • Rental Space - will get a real estate agent to find a suitable location.
  • Tech Talk - DK did a presentation called "Reverse Engineering Patches".

Meeting ended at 7:50pm, members then gathered at the Barley Mill for drinks.

February 10th, 2009 - 7pm @ Eau Claire foodcourt

Meeting topics:

  • Temporary Storage Area - needed for server rack which will not fit through a regular doorway (garage door or double-door only).
  • Rental Space - still looking for spaces.
  • Blog - will register free account at blogger.com for Protospace. It was asked what is the best way to export entries and templates should we later start our own blog server.
  • Tech Talks - short topics to be featured at weekly meetings. Ideas? Post them.
  • Other Business - Paul asked for donations of old locks to practice picking (padlocks, combolocks, door locks, etc.).

Meeting ended at 7:26pm, proceeded to the Garage Billiards Bar where two more members joined us.

February 3rd, 2009 - 7pm @ Eau Claire foodcourt

  • Rental Space - members continue looking for spots; decided against using an agent due to fees and commissions; waiting on pictures of space near airport.
  • Projects - dect's; reverse engineering of embedded devices; "ignite talks" (short talks on special subjects); alternate energy sources for hackerspace such as wind & solar; cube lights; building a RepRap machine and laser cutter; lathe; music analysis; marine electronics.
  • Donations - items to be donated to hackerspace by members include server rack; workstations; drafting table & drafting supplies; fax-printer; oscilloscope; power supply; wireless gear; cable & DSL modems.
  • Bank account - being looked into.

Meeting ended at 7:39pm, most of group proceeded to the Garage Billiards Bar.

  • Discussion on status of incorporation.
    • NUANS search report obtained
    • Plans to get paperwork done by a paralegal
  • Discussion of location search
    • People like the industrial location near the airport, under construction until April
    • We'll continue to search for other places
    • Someone will talk to a commercial real estate firm to help us find a place

    • A mockup was created
    • People wanting to create a skinned website should do so
  • Discussion of physical object donations
    • For objects needing to be donated "now", people volunteered space
    • Future donations are postponed until we have a space
