'''To Donors/Lenders:''' Not all tools are listed, and we always appreciate upgrades to our existing equipment. If you have any of the following tools (or any others) you'd like to donate, please contact a Protospace member or director to arrange for dropoff or pickup. We love tools and give good homes for them! When in doubt, ask, even for small hand tools, there's much we need.

'''To Requesters:''' When adding requests, please fill out the date and your name so people know who to talk to if there are questions. Add new items alphabetically. If your request has been struck out, that means that it has been fulfilled as written. If you are still not satisfied with the equipment at Protospace, please add a new (more specific if necessary) request. If your request was fulfilled and then the equipment was removed from Protospace, please also add a new request.
== Notes ==
The effective bed size is only about 1' by 1'. There are purple marker lines on the bed, that's the limit where the spindle can actually reach.

The router is running on Mach3 (a program running on Windows),instead of LinuxCNC (a Linux distro), so when you boot up the PC sitting next to it, remember to select XP as operating system. We might just wipe the Linux partition in the future.

The ER11 collet we currently have only accepts 1/8' bit shank. Maximum spindle speed is 13,500 RPM. The speed is controlled via a dial knob. As Mach3 can read and adjust spindle speed, I think we can use either optical or Hall sensor with two 1mm by 1mm magnets counter-balanced each other to get this feature.

All Axes are calibrated bang on (don't quote me on this, but the dial gauge says so); however, the backlash compensation must be disabled to achieve a smooth helical ramp in operation. More on this later, but for now if your project requires only straight line milling in and out (like milling a square pocket inside your stock) then feel free to re-enable backlash comp.

All old limit switches got replaced, soft limit settings in Mach3 are in place. Please keep soft limits on.

== Test result ==
After calibration, we tested the machine with 2D Milling operation (Nested square pocket) and 3D Milling operation (Dome shape) and it churned out shapes nicely. (Image 2&3)

I suggest that you keep the speed & feed rate conservative (i.e make it slow) and see how this machine plays with various materials, both wood and soft metal. I have no idea whether or not we can mill Aluminium chunk with this little bugger without wearing it out *prematurely* but aye I'm not expert on this so your opinions are more than welcomed.

== Usage ==
The machine runs on Mach3, the same software previously used on Tormac. Anyone who know how to use the Tormac, or know what you are doing, or can hit E-Stop fast enough, or well, is curious enough and want to play with it, are welcome to use the machine.

The basic procedure:

- Use a 3D Modelling software to model your object (like Fusion360 or Solidworks) then have this software spit out the GCode needed to manufacture your object.
- Launch Mach3 program, turn on CNC machine, do Homing sequence and Stock origin sequence
- Feed this GCode into Mach3 and it will control the CNC machine to churn out the parts.

Initial Draft "How to" document ==> [http://wiki.protospace.ca/images/1/15/141-Mini-CNC-Basics.pdf 141-Mini-CNC-Basics.pdf]

There is an introductory Fusion360 class for those who want to use this or the Tormac Metal CNC machine.

== Enclosure ==
While noise is not much of an issue, this machine can generate lots of fine sawdust so you need to stand at the machine, pointing the shop-vac hose right at the spindle to minimize the dust. I think a machine of this size and weight, an enclosed box for it is manageable.

== Training & Liability ==
Future (proper) training needed for this machine.
Use the machine as your own risk. Wear PPEs at all time.

== Samples ==

Protospace has a board of directors. This is a requirement of being incorporated under the Alberta Companies Act. The directors are elected annually, at Protospace's [[annual general meeting]]. In the eyes of the law, the directors are responsible for everything Protospace does, but, within Protospace's organizational structure, they are responsible for a lot less.

== Directors' responsibilities ==

* Accounting
* Managing the bank account
* Paying bills
* Performing reimbursements (currently)
* Dealing with the landlord
* Dealing with the governments
* Making case-by-case decisions on small things that affect only one member at a time, such as eligibility for vacation status
* Accessing the security video recordings when necessary

=== Things members may think are the directors' responsibilities, but actually can and should be done by other members ===

* Making decisions that set policy or otherwise affect multiple members
* Taking payments
* Maintaining equipment

== Contacting the directors ==

You can contact the directors by sending an email to [mailto:directors@protospace.ca directors@protospace.ca]. If your message is not confidential, you can also email [mailto:info@protospace.ca info@protospace.ca], which goes to the directors and a few other members who have volunteered to answer questions and help members there.

== What are the facilities? ==

We have 2 bays, usually called 'The Space', at [https://goo.gl/maps/dAx7o1JPRQ3MNnvf7 #108 1530 27 Ave NE Calgary]

== Equipment and materials ==

Well, we maintain a list of [[tools we have]] as well as a handy look up for places to [[Where to source tools and materials|source materials]]

== What are the open hours? ==

Open to the public? Well we host a "Meet & Geek" open house every Tuesday night from 19:00 to 21:00, which is also the weekly social event for Members. Guests are welcome to show up then and see the space, bring their own projects, stop and ask anyone what they're working on, solicit some feedback or share ideas, or get a tour or sign up for their own membership.

Open, for Members to use? 24/7. There are no noise restrictions so you can run tools as late or early as you please. If you are a Probationary Member, then you can come whenever you can convince someone else to show up and sponsor you to be at the space.

== What is the sign up process? ==

The best way to find out how Protospace works is drop by one of our open house nights -- held every Tuesday, beginning at 19:00. You can meet people, have a tour, see things in action, find out how it works, and get your questions answered.

After you know about Protospace, come by any open house and fill out a membership form. Once you've submitted an application, and paid your first dues, you can enjoy a probationary or trial membership. During this trial period, meet more people, try stuff out, and take care the other details (like attending a New Member orientation), so that you can become a vetted keyholder. You can find out all of the details about signing up at an open house!

== Who is it suited to? ==

Anyone who likes to make, tinker, experiment, or learn.

== Who is it not suited to? ==

People who are not excellent to others.

== What training (safety, etc) do you need? ==

To use any tool larger than a screwdriver, you need to take our New Member Orientation course. After that many of our tools have a formal training course to use them, and the rest are generally done by a quick one on one check out process.
You can see the list of current classes at https://my.protospace.ca/school.

== What are the membership options? ==

A Keyholder is a vetted member, sometimes called a "full" member with 24x7 access to the space. A subsidized rate is available for students and other with limited income.

For those people who never come on their own, but want to come with their "friend" who is a member, a "Friend Membership" is available. Friend Members do not get an access card or storage shelf, and must be accompanied by a keyholder at all times.

== Is there a minimum membership term? ==

No, there is no minimum time or "contract". However, we do not offer "drop in" or "single month" memberships -- if you chose to stop being a member, you must go through the one month Probationary period again, to rejoin. (We allow a "vacation period" annually if requested).

== Schedule of events/training/regular meet up times/etc ==

The [[event calendar]] is kept fairly up-to-date. Dates of training events are also available at https://my.protospace.ca/school. Other than that, monitoring the "protospace-discuss" Google group is probably the best way to hear what's going on.

== How do you get involved? (and not feel like an outsider) ==

Lots of people often fish on the mailing list for help on projects. Often at times you can come to a Tuesday Meet & Geek and people will be spitballing ideas and they turn into projects. Be a spitballer.

== How to gain entry/security/keys ==

You need to be [[Faq#What_is_the_sign_up_process.3F|a Full Member]]

== Can I use all of the equipment? ==

Anything that doesn't require training is available to you after you complete the New Member Orientation and General Safety seminar. Larger, more dangerous or more specialized equipment require training. Generally, these machines are labelled, as well as noted on the [[tools we have]] page.

== When can I visit? ==

Tuesday evenings between 19:00 and 21:00 are the best time to meet the most people. It is the only scheduled time for public to attend. If this does not work for you, inquire and someone may be willing to give you a tour some other day.

== If I join, when can I use the space? ==

Once you become a vetted keyholder, you can use the space anytime you like, 24x7. For the first month, you will be a Probationary Member and can use the space when accompanied or supervised by a vetted keyholder.

== How much does it cost? ==

Our membership rate is $55 per month.
A subsidized rate of $35 is available to students and those in need.
You can join as a friend of a keyholder (without your own key or shelf), or as a supporter (donor) for $10 per month or more.

When you first sign up, if you pay for your first two months together, we'll give you a third month free.
At any time, if you pay for a full year, you get a free month (12 for the price of 11).

== How can I pay? ==

[[Set up a payment]]

== Can I store my stuff there or do I have to take it home each time? ==

Full members get a shelf.

If the space you need is larger than can be fit on the shelf you need to pitch it to the membership as a [[Large project storage|large project]].

== Will you teach me to ...? ==

Depends on who I am. Depends on what ... is. Most Protopians will help out if they can. If they can't they will usually point you at someone who will. Keep in mind that everyone is there on their own time, do not expect them to drop everything to train or show you something.

We tend to be a helpful community that is willing to share, teach, and learn. It's reasonable to ask.

== Are other people interested in the same things I am? ==

Odds are good. Probably frighteningly good.

== I have a great idea, but I don't know how to do it, will you help me? ==

Maybe not me, but someone will. Throw up a question on the [https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/protospace-discuss discussion list] and watch the ensuing madness of ideas rushing through the internet towards your email client.

== Can I make things that I sell? ==

Sure. If you make use of a machine and it requires consumables or you push it through more than enough wear to cause damage, you will be expected to monetarily compensate the space. Also, we are not a production shop. You can't reasonably turn Protospace into an assembly facility. If your production stands in the way of others wanting to reasonably use the space, you may have to answer some hard questions.

== How can I get more information? ==

The [[Faq|FAQ]] is a good start :)

The [https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/protospace-discuss discussion list] on Google Groups is a great way to communicate with members.

== Conventions ==

=== Page titles ===
Generally, page titles should be lowercase except for the first letter (which MediaWiki requires to be uppercase (though there is a workaround in case it needs to be displayed lowercase)). This allows linking to the article without having to unnaturally capitalize the title: <nowiki>[[large project storage]]</nowiki> instead of <nowiki>[[Large Project Storage]]</nowiki>. MediaWiki automatically handles it when you make a link with no uppercase first letter, but the other uppercase letters in the article title must be uppercase in the link for the link to work (unless you manually create a redirect). Unfortunately, when Matt F created most of the pages on the wiki, he did not think of this, leaving us with many pages with capitalized titles. Ian O is gradually decapitalizing them.

An exception to the above is titles that are formal titles of articles rather than just descriptive titles of pages. This can be somewhat subjective; it really depends on how you want people to mention your article in other articles.

==== Equipment page titles ====
Equipment page titles should follow the format ''<equipment type>[, <salient and/or differentiating qualities>][ (<make and model>)] ID:<tool's ID number>'', where square brackets indicate optional parts and angle brackets indicate parts you fill in with the appropriate information. (This is a ''fully qualified equipment name''; future improvements to the wiki will allow tools to also be referred to by short names, with some degree of automatic generation and association between the different kinds of names. FQENs allow easy disambiguation and sorting.)

'''Examples of good equipment page titles:''' [[Air compressor, 80-gallon (MAXair Premium)]], [[milling machine (ACRA AM4V)]], and [[inspection mirror, 18" gooseneck]].

'''Examples of acceptable equipment page titles:''' [[Oxygen concentrator]] (doesn't contain any disambiguating qualities or make/model, but it's not really a problem because we only have one), [[jigsaw]] (same)

'''Examples of bad equipment page titles:''' [[Plate Joiner]] (capitalized), [[jointer]] (was okay but we now have another one)

'''Examples of very bad equipment page titles:''' [[Plasma Cutter (Yellow, huge)]] (capitalized (inconsistently); contains the wrong info in the wrong place), [[welder (Stick, orange)]] (same problems), [[vice (giant)]] (misspelled; contains the right info in the wrong place)

Pages for tool collections, such as [[rulers]], [[squares]], and [[welding magnets]], have simple descriptive collection names.

=== Equipment pages ===

Pages for equipment we currently have should use [[Template:Equipment page]], while those for equipment we no longer have should use [[Template:Equipment page removed]]. Note that the latter adds a few fields relating to the removal and substitute tools. (When updating the wiki for a piece of equipment being removed, don't forget to move it to the ''Old Equipment Removed'' section of the [[Tools We Have]] page.) See the templates' documentation pages for details on using them.

After the template and before any further sections, please add any categories appropriate for the equipment. The templates automatically add [[:Category:Tools]] or [[:Category:Tools no longer at Protospace]], respectively. The other categories to apply to tools are subcategories of those; you can browse their child categories to find appropriate categories to add. Adding categories is done with the same syntax as links. For example, including the code <nowiki>[[Category:Woodworking tools]]</nowiki> adds the page to that category. (To link to a category as seen earlier in this paragraph, use e.g. <nowiki>[[:Category:Woodworking tools]]</nowiki>.)

=== Equipment image names ===

Images of equipment should use the tool's ID number as their filename. For example, the image used on the [[Laser cutter (Trotec Speedy 300) ID:107|Trotec's page]] is called [[:File:107.jpg|107.jpg]], as the Trotec's ID number is [[107]].

=== Font Awesome icons ===

As listed below in the ''Installed extensions and modules'' section, this wiki has Font Awesome 4.4 installed. The following icons are suggested—use others that seem appropriate wherever you want:

* For links that are only accessible to Protospace members (e.g. administration mailing list, my.protospace.ca), use the '''key''' icon:
<span class="fa fa-key"></span>

* For checklists, use the '''square-o''' and '''check-square-o''' icons:
<span class="fa fa-square-o"></span>
,
<span class="fa fa-check-square-o"></span>

== Installed extensions and modules ==

{{Warning|Follow the procedure, or your project may be considered abandoned and thrown out or claimed by other members!}}

Members get personal storage shelves to store their personal projects and tools. However, many times, members temporarily need more storage space to work on larger projects, and taking project items home every night is inconvenient. '''Large project storage (LPS)''' exists to alleviate this problem by allowing members to store large projects elsewhere than their member shelves for a predetermined length of time, dependent on approval from the other members and compliance with the other terms of the [[Storage Policy|storage policy]].
==Procedure==
# Pitch your project on the administration mailing list as instructed on the [[Storage Policy]] page.
# Update the above table to reflect where you will be storing your project, and the deadline. Please enter an edit summary. (Something like "Added project" is fine.)
#* Don't worry about color-coding or any other fancy features if you don't know how to do those things. More experienced wiki editors can handle those for you after you put in the information.
# Create a page for your project as described below, and add a link to your project page to the table in the ''Project, or current contents'' column.
# Be sure to post updates on your project page weekly, and update the date in the ''Last updated'' column when you do. (If you do not, your project may be considered abandoned under the storage policy.)

===Creating a project page===

# Create a new page in the wiki. This can be done by either of the following methods:
#* First add a link to your nonexistent page to the table. Then, after saving or previewing the page, click the link—you will get the form to start your page.
#* Navigate to your desired page title (e.g., by using the search box). The wiki will tell you it doesn't exist, and offer to let you create it. This will also get you to the form to start your page. Then you can come back here and add the link afterward.
# In the editor enter this code:
<nowiki>{{subst:Project storage}}</nowiki>

# Save the page.
# Edit the page (which will now have the template added) to add the appropriate information. Decorate your new project page as you see fit.

'''If this is too confusing or isn't working the way you want, just ask for help on the admin list or via the [[designated wiki editors]] page.'''

==History of large project storage==

At the June 2013 EGM, the [[storage Policy|current storage rules]] were approved, after many members were greatly inconvenienced by other members' projects being left out in common work areas. They came into effect September 1, 2013. Back then, there were dozens of projects unclaimed and unsponsored in the space. See [[Transition Project List]] for details of those projects.

In May 2016, Ian O found that this page had not been updated since November 2013, and that the shelf labels were all gone with the exception of one reading "BAY B" whose referent was not clear, and decided to update both.
Ian Oliverhttps://wiki.protospace.ca/index.php?title=Approved_policies&diff=4512Approved policies2019-11-23T19:08:11Z
Ian Oliver: simplified link to moved page

Protospace has a lot of traditions and things passed down by oral tradition. As the membership has grown, it's become necessary to codify some things into written policies.

Policies are generally adopted by the membership at an Annual General Meeting, an Extraordinary General Meeting, or a monthly Members' Meeting. In some cases, a policy can be set by the Directors.

As policies are adopted in a written form, they are [https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0Bx_IBOMvhGElU2VHeTRZVWd2dHM being collected in one place], as well as posted here. Members can review the minutes of the appropriate meeting for additional background.

A storage policy was passed at the July 2013 Extraordinary General Meeting to enable large projects to be stored at Protospace. It has been in effect since September 1, 2013.

This page is a description of the new policy, how it works, and how to use it. When in conflict, refer to the policies as stated in the [[Approved Policies|policy book]].

To check for available storage bays and see projects currently assigned to them, see the [[large project storage]] page.

==Policy==

# Projects worked on or stored in the common area, whether personal or for Protospace, require approval from the membership.
# For approval consideration, projects must state a timeline with milestones that its sponsors commit to.
# Projects must state or be given a work/storage location that the membership approves and the sponsors commit to.
# Projects must be documented and at minimum weekly updates given on the wiki, even if no progress is made, or else sponsors are tacitly confirming their project is abandoned.
# If timeline/milestones have failed to be met, sponsors are required to remove their project without being asked. If not removed, this is the sponsor confirming for everyone that it's now garbage or free-for-all.
# After 1 week physically removed from Protospace, projects may be re-pitched to the membership with a new timeline and brought back if approved.
# Timelines may be adjusted with a new pitch at the 50% mark, based on success of updates/progress, but no floating deadlines.
# If contact information is left, a 1 week grace period is allowed for contact and actual removal in the case of a failed milestone, timeline, or weekly update. A parking ticket will be placed and signed by the person who has contacted the project owner. This is not an extension; it's a removal period.
# No grace period is given for things left without approval.
# One week debate period for uncertain, sudden donations brought to the space.
# All items in common areas must be tagged to identify item and owner, donations included. Unlabelled things are considered common items.

==Procedures==

===How to pitch:===

# Start a thread on the admin list. '''Describe your project''', briefly and loosely; no one needs intricate details.
# '''State your eviction date'''. Not how long you think it'll take—your actual, binding deadline you commit to.
# '''Suggest where your project will be stored'''.
# Wait for 2 days to see if it passes ''consensus - 1''. Else, discuss.
# Revise deadlines/milestones/location as necessary.

If approved, [[large project storage#Creating a project page|create a project page]] here on the wiki and edit the [[large project storage#Current large project storage assignments|large project storage table]] to let others know your chosen location is in use and when it will be available again.

===Example of a pitch:===

"I'm building a '''bedside table'''. It's a '''personal project'''. My deadline is '''3 weeks: Sept 21'''. It's quick, so I don't think I need milestones. I need enough room to store the lumber and build; '''LPS-4A looks large enough''' and according to the wiki is currently unassigned. Any objections?"

===How to be critical of a pitch:===

# Consider the positive impact of the project on the membership (infrastructure, awesomeness, etc).
# Consider the negative impact of the project on the membership (where it's being put and for how long, how big it is).
# Consider the track record of the person pitching it (cleaning up after themselves, doing what they say they will, communication, deadlines met or missed in the past, etc).
# Consider how reasonable the deadline is.
# If claim is reasonable, do nothing.
# If claim is unreasonable, state your objection.
# It's the sponsor's job to convince everyone, but be helpful and suggest what would be the next most reasonable thing in your opinion.

===Example of criticism:===

"I think your 1 year deadline for a large project sitting in the middle of the floor with no milestone deadlines along the way is unreasonable. Your project is pretty cool and I think will bring eyes to Protospace, but I think any more than 1 month of it taking up so much floorspace in the bay is unreasonable. Perhaps much of the work could be done at home or in pieces and only the final large assembly be done at Protospace. If you could fit the piece being worked on at any given time into LPS-7 up until the last month, and agree to finished milestones A, B, and C at 3 month intervals, I am okay with this one-year-long build."

==Clarifications==

The membership that cares is expected to be active in what projects get stored, what a reasonable timeline is, whether milestones are necessary, etc. This is a negotiation with the project sponsors. Members may hold out approval until they are happy with the sponsor's commitments. It's all dynamic, membership expresses concern ahead of time, not complains about it later. Once a project is approved, if it stays in its area, makes updates, meets milestones/timeline, and does not impact members beyond that, members should leave sponsors alone about that project.

"'''Approval'''" means ''consensus - 1'', for now. We agreed 2 days for dissent to appear.

A '''milestone''' is a deadline before the end of the timeline. For long projects members may require milestones to ensure an abandoned project doesn't reserve space for several months. There are several other exit stages if progress isn't being made.

Project bays aren't the only place things are allowed to be stored. If you can convince the membership it belongs somewhere, that's part of the pitch/review process. It's expected little leniency in time and space for personal projects, more for Protospace/infrastructure projects.

Members may pitch multiple bays and multiple projects at the same time. It's part of the process whether they can convince the membership that that's fair/reasonable/non-greedy/justified.

Members may leave multiple projects or non-project stuff in their project bay; it's up to them how they arrange their stuff. Being excellent means using it for its purpose, not just overflow because you have timeline space.

Storage crunch is a membership issue; we should enable people to do the right thing the right way by adding more storage, not just adding restrictions on what they can't do.

Being excellent is pulling the plug on your own project before your timeline if you know it's abandoned, not just holding onto it because you're allowed. Another aspect of being excellent is removing your things ASAP when the time comes.

Being excellent is also cleaning up common areas of abandoned project junk.
Ian Oliverhttps://wiki.protospace.ca/index.php?title=Tools_we_want&diff=4509Tools we want2019-11-09T21:04:50Z
Ian Oliver: /* Misc Tools */ added Scott to the arbor press request

Not all tools have equal priority; this is a wish list.

Tools listed in ''italic'' have been suggested for after our next expansion.
Arguably the most popular tool at Protospace, the '''laser cutter''' uses a CO2 laser to cut and engrave a variety of non-metal materials (though some metals can be engraved).

=== Software ===
We currently have '''LaserCut 6.0''' installed on the computer connected to the Laser Cutter. Unfortunately LaserCut 6.0 requires a USB dongle to be hooked up to the PC at all times as a form of [[wikipedia:Digital rights management|DRM]]. If you're running a personal copy you are restricted to a demo version (no saving - though there is a work around). Later versions (6.1+) have dropped the USB dongle requirement but can't communicate with our laser cutter directly.

:The full version, but requires a special SenseLock USB Dongle to be connected to the PC running it or the software is limited to a demo mode (which is still useful for familiarizing yourself with the program). This version is needed in order to communicate with our laser cutter, as 6.1 doesn't support ours.

''LaserCut 6.1'' ([https://docs.google.com/uc?export=download&id=0B7yyT7cWvyTVMVR4RklNLVkyaFk Google Drive], [http://www.leetro.com/english/down/productcatalog2015/SoftwareDriver/MPC6585/LaserCut61%20(MPC6585)%20Installer.rar Direct from Leetro]) for Windows Free

:Not directly compatible with our laser cutter but has no USB dongle requirement, is fully functional aside from not being able to communicate with our laser cutter. Can still be used to prepare files for the earlier version of LaserCut ([[#Downloads|5.3]]). Both versions of LaserCut can be installed at the same time making this version a great option too.

[http://www.wolfiesden.com/Laser/PuzzleCreator.asp Wolfie's SVG Puzzle Generator], exports a randomly generated puzzle in SVG format which can be converted to DXF and then laser cut out of something (in order to make personalized puzzles).

{{Warning|It is imperative that you do a [[chlorine test]] on unapproved materials before working on them with the laser cutter.}}

==Specs==

* 80-watt DC-excited carbon dioxide laser tube
** Water-cooled, with chiller accessible from the front
* Bed size: 1200 mm × 900 mm (47.2" × 35.4")
** Front panel of machine can be removed or folded down to insert pieces longer than 3' (though this can risk dangerous laser radiation exiting the machine, so be careful)
* Controller: [http://www.leetro.com/english/sale/1-2.html Leetro MPC 6525A]
* Can cut or etch up to 1/4" (6 mm)-thick light materials such as woods and some plastics in one pass, or thicker materials in multiple passes
* Cut kerf is approximately 0.3 mm (full width); you should measure it with your material if it's important to your project

{{box.Warning|Do not cut any chlorinated synthetics (some types of plastics and rubbers)! The HCl vapors will damage the machine.}}

==Usage Notes==
* Complete [[Laser Certification]] to learn how to use the laser. Training is offered about once a month.
* Perform a simple [[chlorine test]] on unapproved materials, as cutting or etching chlorinated materials damages the optics
* See [[Power Levels]] page for notes and details on cutting and etching various materials
* Power modulation is in a restricted range in the software due to a firmware bug (approximately 8%-30% represents 0%-100% power)
* Controller occasionally locks up after large cut jobs. E-stop immediately if job timer does not increment in first 5 seconds of job. Post to list for recovery instructions
* Consult our [[Laser Standard Operating Procedure]]

==History==

* Originally on loan for 6 months (ending August 2012) in exchange for Protospace performing repairs.
** Loan has been extended.

==Repairs Needed==

*Upgrades discussed
**Adding air cooling to optics and laser head block
**Convincing power supply to modulate power levels properly
**Seal display on controller to prevent smoke from clouding over time.
**Replace and upgrade chiller (current chiller struggles to keep up with heat generated, and has no safeties on it to signal failure)
**Relocate chiller to an open-air position (wall mounted)

Arguably the most popular tool at Protospace, the '''laser cutter''' uses a CO2 laser to cut and engrave a variety of non-metal materials (though some metals can be engraved).

=== Software ===

{{Warning|It is imperative that you do a [[chlorine test]] on unapproved materials before working on them with the laser cutter.}}

==Specs==

* 80-watt DC-excited laser
** Water-cooled, with chiller accessible from the front
* Bed size: 1200 mm × 900 mm (47.2" × 35.4")
** Front panel of machine can be removed or folded down to insert pieces longer than 3'
* Controller: [http://www.leetro.com/english/sale/1-2.html Leetro MPC 6525A]
* Can cut or etch up to 1/4" (6 mm)-thick light materials such as woods and some plastics in one pass, or thicker materials in multiple passes
* Cut kerf is approximately 0.3 mm (full width); you should measure it with your material if it's important to your project

{{box.Warning|Do not cut any chlorinated synthetics (some types of plastics and rubbers)! The HCl vapors will damage the machine.}}

==Usage Notes==

==History==

* Originally on loan for 6 months (ending August 2012) in exchange for Protospace performing repairs.
** Loan has been extended.

==Repairs Needed==
